>Hi there, welcome to the forum!
>I am interested to know how your LT came to Canada. As far as I know, there never was a LT1 Version that met northern american standards.#### My LT 4x4 grew up in Germany and immigrated to Canada May of this year. Volkswagen Canada actually sold two LT 55s in 1986 in Canada. One is in Prince George which is 125km north of me. But as a rule, they were never sold in Canada or the USA. As far as I know, mine is the only LT 4x4 in North America.
>Anyway, concerning the engines, I think the 5-cyl. engines would fit best, but if these were not sold in Canada, that's not much help. Even if someone would ship you such an engine, you would have trouble with spare parts later on. I think the only 5-clinder engines sold in North America are the old Audi engines in the 1980s (with and without turbocharge) and the 2.5l 110kW engines in the Golf/Jetta Mk5, but all these are for gasoline and not Diesels and maybe not too good for your purpose.
##### We got the 5 cylinder Diesel engine in the T4 - but it wasn't the TDI. The reason for wanting the 4 cylinder is for the parts just like you said.
>About the 4-cyl. in general, one of us asked Mr. Sülzer (an enineer who first convertet the LT to 4x4 bevore VW themselves did) about that. He said that this would be a problem, because the gearbox was not made for the strong torque. Especially a 4-cyl. engine would deliver a stronger pulse with each ignition than a 6-cyl. engine and the gears wouldn't stand these pulses very long. But as long as nobody tries it out, we will not know if that really is the case, so maybe you just go ahead (an maybe put aside a new gearbox just for spare). Maybe use a higher flywheel mass and hope that it works out.
##### I have killed two T3 Syncro gearboxes with a TDI, so I know what torque is all about :-) What I would like to do is use a TDI because I can get the software changed so there is maybe 25% more torque than the ACL below 3000 rpm and then "open it up" above 3000 rpm. A dual mass flywheel would also be a good idea too.
>The Pumpe-Düse engines themselves are not counted among the best that VW build, there were some versions that are known to always get some problems. At least in Europe they are not sold any more, the new models have common rail injection.#### Common rail starts in Canada for the 2009 model year. No Diesels here for 2008 model year. Before that is was the 100hp PD from 2004 to 2007.
>Anyway, a modern Tdi-engine has a control unit that waits for signals of all kinds of sensors all over the car, that the LT1 cannot deliver, otherwise the engine will run in some kind of emergency mode or even not at all. So it will be quite a challenge to install the electric system an the sensors or at least fake them properly.
#### I know the TDI electronics intimately! I have installed several TDIs into T3s, both the VE and PD style. It will be no problem for me to get the LT to have a TDI run correctly!
>Sorry I could not help you much with your problem, we are all just starting to think along these lines about Tdi-engines in the LT but so far I have not seen a good solution jet. But maybe I gave you some ideas to think about.
##### What I am thinking about is getting the 6 cylinder bellhousing and then drilling it to accept the four cylinder bolt pattern. I have lots of VW gearboxes here and a TIG so "cutting and pasting" bits to it to make it work should be an afternoon's work - then get it machined flat and it *should* work - famous last words I know! ;-)
